Lingolia Review 2024: Best Tool to Learn Grammar
The ideology behind most language learning platforms is that learning grammar is not an important aspect. It might be correct to an extent, but it is definitely not entirely true. Every language has its own unique way of speaking. You might have noticed that some languages end with ‘-ese’ and others with ‘-ish’. But why? It’s because of grammar. Of course, without understanding the grammatical reasons, it is tough to fully comprehend the language. To bridge this gap, there is a special app – Lingolia. But is it worth it? To decide, let me show you how it works in the Lingolia review guide.
What is Lingolia?
Ligolia is an app that helps to learn the language with the help of the most underrated aspect i.e. Grammar. The lessons are created engagingly, making it easy to learn the language. It covers all the aspects including- grammar, vocabulary, conversations, etc. The only thing they want is to teach you the language in a fun and interactive manner.
Languages Offered
The number of languages is the biggest drawback of it. Here are the languages offered on it-
- English
- German
- Spanish
- French
- Esperanto
Important: I have been learning new languages for a long. There are many platforms, I have used. This is the only platform that gave me the lowest number of languages.
Pricing
The content on the platform is free to use. There are multiple lessons that you can take freely on the platform. However, not all the lessons are free. To unlock them, there is a subscription plan to take up. The subscription plan is further divided into two types-
- Lingolia Plus
- Lingolia Pro
Lingolia Plus is the individual membership, whereas Lingolia Pro, is for groups of individuals together. Here, I have discussed the pricing for Lingolia Plus depending on the duration of the plan-
Duration of the plan | Pricing |
3 month | €11.40 |
6 months | €19.80 |
12 months | €36 |
The pricing of the plans is not very costly. It’s like ‘icing on the cake’. The free and subscription plans are both really helpful. At the time of checkout, I could also change the currency to US$.
In addition to that, there is a pro version of it. It’s for saving your money. You can share the login details with other members. It will divide the money between you and others. Suppose, you are taking a 3-month duration, the pricing for a pro membership is €15. Now 4 members want this subscription. Sharing the access will reduce the cost. Each member, including you, will have to pay €3. Isn’t it saving a lot of your money? Even if there are only two people to share, the price will be €7.5 per person.
How are the courses created?
The course of each language follows a basic structure. I have discussed the sections that you get in these courses below-
1. Grammar
As it basically focuses on learning grammar, the first section you get is of it. I started using it to learn German. Though I learned it through Duolingo, there were no grammatical explanations for it. This platform helped me to bridge that gap. The topics covered in the grammatical part of each course include-
- Verbs
- Tenses
- Adjectives
- Nouns
- Prepositions and much more
Everything related to grammar is covered in a single place. There are explanations and examples for each of them.
2. Vocabulary
Don’t know the words and phrases? This is the section that help you. The things covered in this section are –
- Idioms
- Numbers
- Time
- Countries
- Words
Everything that is related to vocabulary can be learned here.
Note: The above two sections are covered in each course, but the rest are not covered in all courses. Thus, I can say German is a subject that covers the most content.
3. Listening and Reading
Note: This section is available in all the courses except for the Esperanto course.
Reading and listening are two important aspects of learning the language. This is what I learned from Du Chinese. Lingolia also offers similar features to learn a language. There are multiple audio texts and transcripts to improve listening skills. On the other hand, to improve reading skills, there are specific texts and comprehensions.
4. Writing schools
Note: It is only for two languages – German and English
Writing schools basically focus on developing the right writing style. Learning a language requires a deep understanding of how it is written. Where to add commas, question marks, punctuations, etc., is also important to notice. Every language has its own writing style. Thus practicing it is important.
5. Book and E-book
Note: Again, it is only for two languages – German and English
The traditional way of teaching a language is through the books. I have used multiple platforms, but no platform provides extra resources. This platform is different from others. Here, I got the link to a perfect book for me. However, I don’t like it much. Of course, they provide the links, but there is no free E-book.
6. Background (only for Esperanto)
It’s a feature that was not even available in German. In this section, you will learn what it is, why to learn, etc. This section is the history of Esperanto. Do you know it is an invented language? I got this fact from the background section. It is also known as Conlang or constructed language.
7. Tests and quizzes
I have discussed the sections that you get on this platform. But without testing the knowledge, there is no fun to learn it. Lingolia has not failed in that thing either. There are a lot of exercises created to test your knowledge. Each lesson you learn has some exercises. They are created based on different levels. Take them and check where you stand.
8. Community and support
When you get a community of people to practice the language with, it makes your learning enjoyable. To provide you with such an environment, there is a community on this platform. Post a query or connect with new people. Get the answers to your problems.
Update: The community feature is no more available on it.
Lingolia review: Should you choose it?
Choosing a platform to learn a language requires an understanding of how the course is created. As I have discussed already, it is easy to understand why you should choose it. Unlike other platforms, it offers grammar lessons. The lessons are well explained. I would say, the experience I had with it, is far better than others. Usually, I don’t like spending money on platforms offering free content. But trust me, this platform made me do that too. You can imagine how impressed I was with the platform.
Contrary to most platforms, these platforms add much to the premium version. It unlocks all the grammar lessons and allows you to take the practice exercises. However, if some of your friends also want to use it, take the Lingolia Pro membership. Undoubtedly, my experience with it was superb. The only thing that I didn’t like was the limited number of languages and fewer speaking exercises.
What are the benefits and drawbacks of using Lingolia?
Undoubtedly, it’s the best one among language learning platforms, but it does not mean there are no drawbacks to it. Here is a quick comparison of the things I liked and disliked about it-
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Detailed grammatical lessons | Fewer languages |
Lessons are in an interactive manner | Few speaking exercises |
Content for each level of learner | The lessons and exercises are mostly in text form |
Alternatives
There are very few languages available on this platform, making it a bad fit for people who want to learn any other language. Additionally, some people don’t learn well through text alone. Therefore, I am sharing some alternatives that can help you learn languages-
1. Duolingo – Gamified Approach
Duolingo is a popular language learning platform that follows the gamified approach. The reason behind its popularity is its free version and engaging approach. There are more than 40 languages to choose from. Just like Lingolia subscription plans, it also has similar plans. The Plus and Pro plans of Lingolia work similarly to the Individual and Family plans of the Duolingo subscription. (Super Duolingo).
2. Preply – Live teaching
I am sure, you must have heard about iTalki – the famous language-teaching love app. But do you know about Preply? It’s a platform that works similarly to iTalki. There are so many tutors for different languages, that I also got confused with whom to go further. I took 5 trial classes, before choosing the tutor for Italian classes. Although I had a basic idea of language, they helped a lot to improve my conversational skills. If you are on a tight budget, filter the tutors based on the prices.
3. Rosetta Stone (Audio based lesson)
The course on the platform helped me a lot. All the lessons are created in audio-based form, making it a perfect choice for those who want to improve their pronunciation. Not just that, it also offers special live classes. Each group has 6 students in it. Due to this, the teacher of the class could give attention to all the students in it.
Conclusion
Lingolia is a platform that covers the major aspects of language, i.e., grammar. Unlike other platforms where grammar might not hold much importance, Lingolia excels in this area. It not only teaches grammar effectively but also covers vocabulary comprehensively. Subscribing allows you to unlock all lessons and test your knowledge. While it’s a great platform, not everyone enjoys learning through text-based lessons. In such cases, focus on alternatives that suit your learning style.
