Teuida Review 2024: Practice Conversations in Korean and Japanese
Are you planning to learn Korean or Japanese? I have great news for you. There is an app that focuses exclusively on these two languages, called Teuida. I had no idea about this platform while learning Japanese, but I used it to learn Korean. It was an amazing experience. It’s unlike a typical language learning platform; there is a unique twist and frequent updates. You might have many questions right now: How does it work? What are the updates? And more. Don’t worry; let me share everything in this Teuida review.
I am sure, you would love how the platform is created.
Quick Takeaways
- Teuida is a platform that teaches Korean and Japanese languages. Recently they have added Spanish language on the platform.
- The courses are divided into levels which are a set of units. Each unit further contains multiple lessons in it.
- Lessons have conversational practice sessions which make the platform most interesting.
- There are fewer grammatical and writing practices.
What is Teuida?
Teuida is the platform that teaches Korean and Japanese interestingly. It basically has cues from a linguist – Stephen Krashen. The basic structure of this platform is also the same as others. It focuses on comprehensible information rather than grammar rules. This app is for those who actually want to speak Korean and Japanese language. It made me actively engaged with the language and the movement when I opened up the app.
If you are a Momoland follower, I have good news for you. The brand ambassador of this platform is Nancy from this brand. Overall, the app gives you the experience of having a conversation with real people but in actuality, they are conversing with the pre-recorded videos. Despite being a popular choice for the Korean language, it does not have much to offer for the Japanese language.
Update: Recently they added Spanish to their platform in March 2024.
Pricing
The platform follows the freemium plan. The platform is free to use, but you must earn study keys to unlock new lessons. However, if you want to access the unlimited study keys, get the subscription plan. It will help you to get an ad-free experience and restore the streaks if you lost them in the last 24 hours. There are three plans depending upon the duration of it. The table below shows the pricing of it-
Duration of the plan | Pricing of it |
1 month | $9.99 per month |
3 months | $20.99 ($6.99 per month) |
12 months | $59.99 ($4.99 per month) |
Course Overview
The design of this platform is super. It has a great interface and menu navigation. It’s like a game-based platform. Every time I complete a lesson, I receive a study key, which is used to unlock a new lesson. Of course, I will discuss it later on. Another thing that I found interesting was the course being divided into levels, units, and lessons. To make things more clear, here is an overview of the platform-
1. Levels
Levels are divided on the basis of particular themes and topics. It consists of 6-10 units in it. Each unit has a specific object related to the theme of the level. At present, there are five levels in each language. You may think that having only 5 levels will not get you the beginner level. Trust me, the levels are divided in such a way that you get a lot of understanding. Many levels are presently being developed and each week there is a new unit added into it. I could skip the lesson or choose a lesson of my own choice.
2. Units
The units are the ones that focus on the objective-based theme. The objectives are basically the things that are useful for a beginner learner. Some of the names of the units are –
- Introducing yourself
- Asking about hobbies
- Expressing likes and dislikes and many more
Each unit is created in a way that is based on conversational scenarios. There are multiple lessons in a unit. Thus, let us now understand how the lessons are created.
3. Lessons
As I mentioned above, the platform was created to prepare us with the right speaking skills. There are four lessons in a single unit. Each lesson teaches a specific phrase. These phrases were used in speaking exercises of the unit. This is the best part of the exercises. I was able to practice pronunciation with lots of listening and repeat drills. It also provides explanations in a way of translations based on the context of the content.
The translations on the platform make it a more interactive Phrasebook. I was really happy with the way it taught me sentence construction and provided me with cultural notes. These cultural notes highlight the specific scenarios in which the phrase is used. The platform is designed to improve speaking skills. Thus, there is a use of voice recognition technology that helped me to get feedback on my pronunciation.
4. AI Pronunciation Feedback
The tagline says it all –
Learn Korean and Japanese as you SPEAK IT
This shows how well the pronunciation feedback tool is important. To get the feedback on my pronunciation, I had to speak on my phone and get the feedback on it.
When I was recording myself, the statement was also written in a specific writing style. The feedback was given in the form of a letter grade, along with a color grading style. As the official statement made by the platform focuses on improving pronunciation, I thought the voice recognition tool would best work for me. But unfortunately, it was not. There were times when I received an A+ grade for incorrect pronunciation.
After using so many platforms, one thing I am sure about is that no voice recognition tool works well for me. Every tool has one or other disadvantage of it. Another thing that I didn’t like about this platform was the unavailability of getting the instructions to correct the pronunciation. Of course, there are listen and repeat exercises, but no instructions on how to correct them.
However, it gives romanization for both languages. Thus, it made it easy for me to have a correct pronunciation.
5. Conversational practice
So, far I have discussed different features of the platform. Now is the time to discuss the most engaging exercise of the platform which is Conversational practice. Have you played those games where you have to select the right conversations of your character? Well, the conversational practice of this platform is performed in a similar manner.
There is a scenario in which I was placed and had to handle the conversations of my side. In this practice, there were high-quality videos of the person with whom I had to converse with. The experience of this exercise feels so real. I was impressed by the method of creating this exercise. The character in the video even nodded to me on my multiple replies. Overall it was like I was talking to that character in real life.
In addition to that, there were a lot of words and phrases that were covered during this conversation. Undoubtedly, there were English translations for them, but I got confused sometimes.
6. Tests
Another important feature of the platform is the testing of the course. At the end of each unit, there is a test section. Usually, these tests are locked by the platform. To unlock them I had to use the study key.
Remember: You only get a single study key while progressing through the single unit.
All the above features are part of the home tab. There are some other tabs on this platform-
a. Community tab
It is the tab where I can check the new updates and the announcements made by the team on the platform. With the help of this tab only, I get to know they have added Spanish courses as well. Every announcement made has a section for liking and commenting on it. I used the comment section for posting my doubts related to the course.
b. Stories Tab
An interesting fact about this platform is that Korean is the oldest course of the platform. Thus, in addition to the community tab, there is a special tab — the Stories Tab. This tab gives the experience of watching a short series. There are multiple stories that you can go through. My favorite story was “ In Search of a Soulmate”. If you have read my previous blogs, you must know I am a food lover. Therefore, Ordering Food and Drinks was my second favorite series on it. Depending upon your own interest, select the series of your choice.
c. Profile Tab
The profile tab helped me get my statistics. I could check how many words and phrases I have learned so far and what is my pronunciation score. In addition to that, there is a streak score that works exactly the same as Duolingo Streak. Additionally, there is another gamified elementary on the platform that is Achievements.
Should you use it?
Despite being a platform that specifically teaches you Japanese and Korean, there are some drawbacks to it. I think it is best suited for those, who want to improve their pronunciation and conversational skills. It is because the platform itself states that they teach language by speaking it up. There are conversational scenarios in which I had to give the reply.
Undoubtedly, it is the best way to improve conversational skills. But what about the Grammar or writing part? The platform has no exercise to do that. In addition to that, their main focus is on beginners and intermediate learners. There is no content for the advanced learners. Thus, as a fresher, I would suggest you practice your speaking skills with it.
What do I like and don’t like about Tequila?
Here is the table showing the things that I like and dislike about the platform-
What I like | What I don’t like |
Kept me engaged with the content | Less grammatical knowledge |
Multiple speaking exercises | No written exercises |
Beginners and intermediate learners | No content for advanced learners |
Perfect for visual learners | |
The content is absolutely free |
Alternatives of Teuida
As I mentioned there is very little grammatical knowledge and no written exercise on it. I have used multiple other platforms to learn them fully. Here are some of the alternatives that you can also use instead of Teuida-
1. LingoDeer – Practice writing
Although it’s an app that helps learn the language by using a proper course, the best part of it is the Alphabet section. I have never seen a platform that teaches the alphabet of a language before delving deep into the course. But this platform does its job quite well. In addition to that, Lingodeer also provides a travel phrasebook. Its travel phrasebook is my traveling partner.
2. Tandem – Language exchange partner
Tandem and HelloTalk are two such platforms that work on a similar learning style. Both platforms connected me with other native speakers. It’s like practicing the conversation with the real people. There are two inbuilt features – Translations and Auto corrections, making it easy for me to communicate with them.
3. iTalki – To find an online Tutor
It’s a platform that is a hub for finding an online tutor. There are multiple tutors in each language. I could take demo sessions with 2 – 3 tutors before selecting a particular teacher for me. Additionally, it was easy to find a tutor on the basis of the budget. Although I took advantage of advanced tutors, one of my friends was on a tight budget. So she decided to get help from community tutors. Let me tell you that, many of the community tutors have more knowledge than the professional ones. Thus, don’t hesitate to take help from them.
Conclusion
Teuida is an app specifically designed for Koreans and Japanese. However, in March 2024, they added a new language: Spanish. The platform operates similarly for each language, giving me the sensation of conversing with a real person during a video call. In reality, however, it was a pre-recorded video. While it helped me improve my conversational skills, it offered no guidance on grammar rules or writing aspects. To practice these, consider using alternatives such as Lingodeer.
