Clozemaster Review 2024: Best for Practicing the Language
There are a lot of platforms that help in learning the language by teaching the words first. However, what if there is an app that does the same but directly by testing the knowledge? This seems to be impossible. Well, I also believed the same before I started using Clozemaster. Yes, there is an app that follows the testing style to teach a new language. But how it works? Let me show you by giving a detailed Clozemaster Review.
Quick Takeaways
- Clozemaster is a platform that tests the knowledge of the learners with the help of fill-in-the-blanks.
- It has a free version and offers 70 different languages on the platform including French, Spanish, Afrikaans, etc.
- The platform only focuses on the intermediate and above level learners.
What is Clozemaster?
Clozemaster is an app, designed to teach the language by providing a lot of vocabulary to the learners. Clozemaster is taken from two different words Cloze and Master. Cloze is basically an exercise like Fill-in-the-blanks. According to the various dictionaries, Cloze is defined as below-
Being a test of reading comprehension that involves having the person being tested supply words that have been systematically deleted from a text.
From the meaning of Cloze, you can understand what exactly can we get from it. Clozemaster has sentences in different contexts with a word missing in it. All you need to do is to choose the correct option and complete the sentence.
What are the languages available on the platform?
There are over 70 languages covered on the platform. Below I have mentioned a few languages available on it-
- French
- Spanish
- Afrikaans
- Arabic
- Bosque
- Danish
- Dutch
- German
- Hindi
- Irish
- Latin
- Russian
- Turkish
Note: For non-English speakers, there is an English course too.
Pricing of Clozemaster
Clozemaster is a plan that has both free and paid versions. The free version has a lot of content to offer. But with the subscription plan, you can get addiction benefits. Below I am discussing the prices you have to pay for it-
Types of plans | Pricing |
Monthly | $12.99 |
Yearly | $69.99 |
Lifetime | $159.99 |
However, I will not recommend you to take the subscription plan. Why? It is because everything that you need to learn is free. It is basically like Duolingo. As Duolingo provides its services for free. Clozemaster is also the same. Some benefits that you get with the Clozemaster Pro version are-
- Changing the number of sentences in a single session
- Unlocking the grammar lessons
- Change the level of the sentences
- Unlocking the cloze collection to practice the particular words or phrases in a single place
There is no fun of taking a subscription for both of them. The content you need to learn is all free. Instead, save the money to get a subscription plan for some other platforms.
Course Curriculum
I have tried this platform for Spanish and German. The way both the courses were created was the same. Keeping that thing in mind, I assume all the courses follow a similar approach. Thus, based on what I experienced in both courses, I will share how the courses are created on the platform.
Before discussing the features I get on it, let me show you what the dashboard looks like. The interface of the dashboard made me feel that I am in a corporate world. Honestly, it was quite boring. There were progress chat and learning features, all altogether. I think changing it can have a great impact on the learners. There were plenty of features on the platform to help me improve my language knowledge.
1. Fluency Fast Track
This is the feature that checks what words I know. The first exercise showed me that the platform is not for learning the language but for testing the skills. As there are only fill-in-the-blank exercises, it is tough for beginners. As a free user, there are 10 questions per round. To get them more, a subscription plan is needed. But I think 10 questions per day is also good to start with.
This exercise allows you to either test the listening or speaking skills or vocabulary knowledge. Along with choosing what you want to practice, you also need to select the mode. In this mode there are two options-
- Multiples Choice Questions
- Text Input
In Multiple Choice Questions, there is a sentence with missing words and options below. There is also the translation of the sentence in it. I have to select the right answer from the options.
Whereas, text input exercises are created similarly but instead of multiple choice options, there are some characters for making the missed words. Complete the sentence by making up a word from the alphabet below.
The exercises for practice different aspects are created similarly with small differences. In the listening practice, you get the native sound along with the sentence to practice. Listen to them and choose your answers.
For speaking exercises, you can record the missing word. And for the vocabulary, the exercises are created normally. Just a sentence and a missing word. I really enjoyed taking the vocabulary test rather than the other two tests.
Each feature of the platform follows a similar way of creating exercises except of reading and listening exercises. Of course, the name itself states that there are multiple Clozes – fill in the blanks exercises. What else can you expect? The bow I have mentioned the features that cover zero similarly-
- Most common words: Covers the common phrases and words that we often use in our daily conversations.
- Grammar Challenges: This section is full of grammar practice. There are various exercises covered on different grammatical topics like prepositions, verbs, subjunctives, etc.
- Random Collection: In it, you get sentences at random levels. For example, you may start with a higher level and end with practicing the basic level.
- Legacy Fast Track: This feature has a total of 19,746 sentences with a similar amount of cloze words in it.
2. listening exercise
It can be a perfect way of boosting listening skills, especially at the intermediate level. Just hear the sentence spoken by the native speaker and get a sentence with the missing word. Choose the missing words and repeat them again. It also has multiple accents, background voice, and audio quality at the end. All the sentences are created in a manner that you will not have any problems while talking with native speakers.
3. Cloze reading exercise
There are so many long reading exercises with multiple missing blanks on them. I have to read the sentences and based on my knowledge, fill in the blanks. To fill in the blanks, choose the one and get the list of options. Select the one to complete the sentences. It also has different features to get translations, audio, etc. These are the sentences that I can add to the Cloze collections section. On the right-hand side of the platform, I could also know the source of the content.
Additional features
Some additional features are also available on Clozemaster. They may not help you in learning the language, but can be useful in staying motivated. Below I have mentioned them in the table-
Features | What it represents |
Score | This shows how many words you have gone through and mastered while playing the sentences |
Level | It shows the number of words completed to get to a new level |
Streak score | The streak score represents the number of days I have used the platform so far |
Ready to review | It is the Spaced Repetition System to practice the words you have gone through already. There are some particular intervals to practice the words again. |
Leaderboard | Leaderboards are competitions that show which level you are at when compared to others |
Favorites | When you go through the sentences, there is an option to add them in the favorite section. This will help you to revise all the important words at a similar time. |
Daily goal | You will have to set Daily goals. Earn a particular number of points each day. |
Clozemaster Review: Should you use it?
After giving the course overview, now is the time to decide if you should use it or not. Firstly, this platform is not for beginners. Thus, there is no fun in using it, if you are an absolute beginner. Further, after using it, the first thing that I disliked about the platform was the interface of it. The look of the platform is too boring. I wish there were some exciting images to make it more interactive. If I talk about the exercises, they were nicely structured. It follows the name of the platform – full of clozes.
Though it justifies the names, I believe there must be something extra in it. There were no videos, or images to make the content engaging. Just remember, it is a platform created for testing the knowledge and not just learning it. However, taking so many tests daily will boost your knowledge a lot. Below I am sharing the advantages and disadvantages of the platform to make it easier to understand.
Pros | Cons |
There are more than 10,000 words to learn from. | The interface is boring. |
It has 70 languages to choose from. | No writing exercises |
Fully free to use. | Zero focus on correcting the pronunciation |
Not for beginners | |
There are just clozes or the fill in the blank exercises |
When to use Clozemaster?
As it is a platform that is basically to test your knowledge, I strongly believe you must use it after completing the beginner level. Don’t just directly start using it. This will confuse you, making you lose motivation. If you have a low budget, try using Duolingo first. Further, I am sharing some alternatives that you can use to learn the content of the platform.
Clozemaster Alternatives
The Clozemaster is an app that is not for beginners and also has less focus on improving pronunciation. Despite being a free platform it is only used for testing the knowledge. If you are looking to learn some new content, it might not be useful. Thus, below I have mentioned the alternative to use instead of Clozemaster-
1. Duolingo
Duolingo is also a free app with a better language teaching method. It follows a gamified approach that helps us to stay engaged with the content. Each exercise on it is like a game. You play, win, and earn a reward. On Duolingo, I earn rewards like XP after completing the lesson. It is one of the best platforms for beginners to learn the language freely.
2. Lingodeer
Lingodeer is another platform that follows the gamified approach. Though it is a paid course, there is limited free content. It starts by teaching the language’s alphabet, making it a cool app. This is because no other platform follows the approach. Though they have a writing system too, they are just for the languages having different styles. But this platform provides an alphabet section for each section.
3. Memrise
Need to focus on vocabulary more? Memrise is what you need. It is a free platform to learn a lot of vocabulary. Earlier it was known for creating its decks. But with the latest version, the platform has removed this feature. Now there is a particular path that is followed. Some topics cover related words and phrases.
4. Tandem
If you are looking to have conversational practice, just use Tandem. It is like a social media platform but more language practice. You connect with the other native speakers on it and start conversations with them. It allows you to connect through a voice call or video call on it. In fact, I have made some good friends on this platform too.
Conclusion
Clozemaster follows the literal meaning of it in the exercises, mastering fill-in-the-blanks. The platform is created with intermediate learners in mind. All the exercises are like fill-ups. You can change the mode of the sentence, either take them in the form of multiple-choice questions or take them as text input exercises. Though there are reading and listening exercises, fill-ups are still involved. As it is full of clozes, there are just practice tests. In short, it is a good way to boost vocabulary knowledge.
