Duolingo Vip Status Explained (+ How to Earn it & Does It Matter?)

How does it feel? Amazing, right? It’s a different feeling when you get this title. When I was asked to mentor the students of Harvard University as a VIP guest, there were no boundaries to my happiness. But I still remember when I got my first VIP tag. It was from Duolingo. Yeah, it’s funny but it’s true. Duolingo VIP status was the first VIP status that I ever received.

It takes years to get this status before your name. But not anymore. With Duolingo, it’s possible to get it, even in a year. Give me the chance to help you know what exactly it is and how you can earn it.

What is Duolingo VIP status?

Duolingo VIP status is the one that is directly related to your streak score. It means that it is not related to your XP score or the languages you are in. Thus, even if you are taking up timed challenges, it will not benefit you to get the VIP status. You will get it as a part of Streak Society. Generally, it is a feature that supports the Duolingo community.

How to get your VIP status?

When I started using Duolingo, I was unaware of this feature. When I completed 365 days on Duolingo and got a streak of 365, I saw VIP status in my streak society. You will reach various tiers as long as your streak gets longer. Once you score 365 streaks, go to the streak page. There you will see Streak Society, tap on it.

If you are eligible you will get the VIP status. You will see the enter now option. Tap on it to activate VIP status.

An important thing that you must remember is that there is no compulsion to activate this status. It means it is totally upto you if you are interested in getting the VIP status or not.

Thus if you are eligible you will see the option of activating your VIP Status. When it’s on, it will state “activated” underneath on leaderboards and in your profile.

If you want to see your VIP Status, check next to your username. You will be able to see your VIP status. The VIP status will be only there till your streak score continues. Thus you must know that there is no need of taking legendary levels and crowns. You will get various levels which you will have to take before you reached VIP status. While completing these levels you will get the achievements.

What benefits do you get for being a VIP on Duolingo?

Getting a VIP status is just a way to show others how streak-free you are. When they will open your profile page, they will be able to see your VIP status. However, there are three main advantages that you get with the help of it-

• Fire Duo
• 3 bonus streak freeze
• 3 Super Duolingo free trials

If you are already at the streak society, you may know that these are the benefits that you get with it. Thus we can say that you only get the benefits of Streay society with VIP status. There are also VIP tiers. Once you complete the streak of 365 days, you will get your first tier. You may also get some extra gems on becoming a VIP. Every year you will get a new tier. So if you have completed 4 years, you will get a 4-year badge under your name in Duolingo.

Does VIP status really matter?

As I already mentioned, the VIP status is only related to maintaining your streak score. Thus, it really does not matter much. It will only show that you are a dedicated user of Duolingo and that you have been using it for more than a year. Also, if you are serious about learning the language, then having a VIP status really does not matter.

So if you are learning your target language every day by spending an hour, and due to some reason you miss one day, it is really OK. Always remember that you are using Duolingo to learn a new language, not to maintain any status on it.

Why Join Duolingo’s VIP Club?

With the help of the VIP club, you can show your skills and accomplishments to other members. You only need a hundred points to join the elite club without much effort. Also if you can maintain the streaks, you may become the longest-serving VIP in the club.

Can you hide the VIP status?

Well, currently you can not hide your VIP status. This means that there is no option of hiding it on your profile. However, you can only lose it if you are unable to maintain the streak.

Can you lose the VIP status?

As we already discussed your VIP status is related to your Streaks on Duolingo. It means that you will only get your VIP status once you have a 365 streak score. If you break your streak score, you may also lose your VIP status. 

How to maintain your VIP status?

Maintaining the streak score after receiving 365 days means you are maintaining your VIP score. If you also do not want to lose your VIP status, follow the steps mentioned below-

1. Take the owl seriously

One of the biggest reasons for using Duolingo is that it is very motivating. Every time I forget to use the platform or complete a lesson, the Duolingo Owl starts prompting on my screen. Not only the owl, but different characters come on the screen and encourage me to take up a lesson.

Suppose you are learning the French language and were not able to complete the task today. You will see Duo saying it’s time to learn French. Try to open and complete the lesson as soon as you can. If needed, try keeping reminders on your mobile so that you do not miss practicing.

2. Streak freezes

Streak freezes are the advantage you get once you complete 365 streaks or obtain your VIP status. Really, it has helped me a lot in saving it from breaking up. You will usually get three free streak freezes when you get VIP status. If you want more, you will either need to purchase them with gems or become a member of Duolingo Plus. By using the streak freeze, you will not lose the streak you have built so far.

However, you must remember that you need to be active for at least a day before using your streak freeze. You can only use it two days in a row and no more than that.

3. Creating a habit

This trick is the one that personally helped me. I made it a habit of completing the course daily. To do that, try to keep a time of either morning or evening to complete your lessons. As I am a morning person, I kept early morning time. When you make it a habit of completing the lessons, you will maintain the streak score for a long.

When I hit the streak score of 365 days, I was able to get a special status known as Duolingo VIP status. Yes, getting a VIP status is very happy movemnet. Undoubtely we can not say same for Duolingo. There are not many benefits of it for leanring the language. You get 3 free streak freezes when you unlock VIP status. It is again something which is related to streak score and not langauge learning. Always remember your final goal is to learn the language and not just to get the status.
