Loecsen Mini Review: Phrasebook App (Updated 2024)
Language learning has become my passion. I have learned more than 10 languages at the advanced level. To learn them properly, I keep trying new platforms. Recently, I got to know about Loecsen. It may be a new name to you; this is because it’s an unpopular platform. I was curious to know why, so I thought to give it a try. You may also be dealing with this confusion. Don’t worry, here is my mini-review of it.
How does Loecsen help to learn the language?
The platform provides three guides that helped me to effectively learn the language-
1. Starting of the lesson
In the first lesson, you will see that there are a lot of explanations of the content. This step helps to prepare effective memory. In this step, the first thing I had to do was choose the theme. Loecsen also allowed me to create my own personalized learning path. After selecting the theme, I took my time to understand the meaning of each word in it. Not just a meaning but also an understanding of how they are used. I was also able to discover many other things, like the origin of the word or a mnemonic tip.
Try to read the words loudly. The voice recognition tool will help you understand whether your pronunciation is correct. Once you have understood the meaning of the word and its pronunciation, now is the time to test your knowledge. These tests are easy to complete giving you an idea of your progress. I had a very simple strategy during these tests. When I got all the answers right, I moved on to the next test. But if I gave even a single wrong answer, I made sure to retake the same test.
2. How to take a test
This model helps to understand what is to be done after understanding the content of the theme. After exploring the content, I had to take the following sessions to strengthen my memory. If you are making mistakes, those words will reappear on your screen frequently. When I was in my tests, there was an option for information. When I clicked on it, there were explanations and tips to memorize it.
Important: remember that the words are tested according to the calculated schedule of natural forgetting. I constantly get a few words for 2 months. After that, I was introduced to entirely new words. It may be because it is the counter to natural forgetting.
3. Between lessons
Now you know how to complete a topic and when to take the test. Now is the time to know but I get in between the lessons. There was an immersion that helped me to listen to the expressions without looking at my screen. The reason it was so relaxing was the mental visualization. Every time I heard about new words and their meanings, I could imagine them.
I tried to listen to those words after waking up and before going to bed. Following these two techniques helped me a lot to completely learn the words. It also gave me the chance to customize my learning experience by allowing me to choose the words to listen to and add music to it.
Note: The first lesson on this platform is for free.
Drawbacks: The method of this platform is really nice and interactive. However, the major drawback that stops me from using Loecsen is the availability of less than 500 phrases in it.
What are the features you get with Loecsen?
Although I have explained how to learn through this platform, here are the features that I got in each lesson-
- Voice recognition – Improving my pronunciation skills
- Audio lessons – To get immersed while listening
- Downloading audio file option – I could easily download the course and get it offline.
- Great tests – Each test helps me to improve my written and oral skills.
- Optimized Spaced Repetition System – It helps me to memorize the words easily
Is Loecsen worth it?
If you are actually interested in learning the language properly, then there is no way of using Loecsen. It’s because there are even less than 500 phrases and words. Thus, if you are a beginner and just want to learn the basic words, there is nothing wrong with using it. But if you aim to learn it properly, try other alternatives.
Alternatives of Loecsen
As I have discussed, there were no huge vocabulary lists or any grammatical lessons. In such a scenario, it will be best to try some alternatives. Thus, I am mentioning some alternatives here:
1. LingQ – Interactive learning tool
LingQ is the platform that made my journey interesting. There were plenty of resources on Loecsen. I got podcasts, articles, etc., all in a single place. In fact, it also allowed me the import material from outside the platform.
2. Live Lingua – Live classes
This platform connects you with a professional tutor. There are one-on-one classes that help to get fluent in the language. The only thing that I didn’t like about this platform was the limited number of languages. There are only 7 languages on the platform. If you want to learn one of them, try this platform.
3. Duolingo – gamified approach
Duolingo is one of the platforms that is loved by every language learner. The way it is designed is commendable. I myself am a big fan of it. Every task helped me to earn some points, which helped me to win the Duolingo leagues. Duolingo is a great platform for a new perfect. If you have just started learning a language, go ahead and give Duolingo a try.
Conclusion
Loecsen is a platform that has the main aim of helping the student to learn the language. There are a lot of themes to choose from. After completing the content on the platform, there are tests to understand your way of learning the language. Despite having a great method of teaching, it is still a big no for me. The reason is that there are very few vocabulary words and phrases in it.
