Speechling Review 2024: How I Correct My Pronunciation?
What is the most important thing while learning a language? Its pronunciation. There is no fun in learning it all but not getting the right pronunciation. Most apps don’t focus on this aspect. This made me very upset. When I was learning Korean, pronunciation was the only thing I was lagging behind in. So, I decided to find a way to overcome it. Speechling was a platform that was specifically designed for this aspect. I know you may also have similar issues with other languages. Try using it. I will share how it works in this Speechling review.
What is a Speechling app?
Speechling is an app specifically focused on teaching you the right pronunciation of the language. According to the mission of the platform-
We are committed to providing nonprofit language coaching in many countries where our users and coaches reside.
There are a lot of topics in a course on which different lessons are prepared. If you are struggling with any of the languages, use Speechling.
Languages available
Before using the platform, it is important to know the languages available on the platform. Thus, here is the list of the languages that you can choose from-
- French
- Spanish
- Korean
- Chinese
- Japanese
- German
- Italian
- Russian
- English
- Portuguese
The only thing I wished there was more; is the other languages.
Is the Speechling app free?
Speechling follows the freemium approach just like Duolingo. There are two plans for it-
- Forever Free
- Unlimited plan
Forever Free provides the entire curriculum freely with audio from native speakers. It also allows you to get the chance to compare your voice with native speakers. The main restriction that I find with the free plan over the subscription one is the coaching sessions. There are only 10 coaching sessions. However, as a free user, this is also a great advantage.
Note: There are not 10 coaching sessions for German and English.
The unlimited plan starts from $19.99 per month. Excited to know what you get at this price? Unlimited live 1-on-1 coaching sessions. Isn’t it amazing? But it is not the only thing you get. There are additional studying materials and feedback from the coach. You can switch the languages and get full access to offline resources.
Speechling review: Should you choose Speechling?
There is not a single reason to say ‘No’ to Speechling. If you want to improve your pronunciation, don’t miss it. It is the best platform to focus on Speaking skills. You can compare yourself with native speakers. The free version gives you 10 coaching sessions which is really awesome. However, there is no proper structure of lessons and less grammatical knowledge. Here is a table to help you understand the benefits and drawbacks of speaking-
Pros | Cons |
Compare your own pronunciation with the native speakers. | Not for beginners |
Have different pronunciation exercises. | There is no proper structure of lessons |
No ads | No reading or writing exercises. |
Available for 24/7. | Less grammatical teaching. |
Awesome speech recording features | |
Availability of live classes |
Note*: If you get the paid version, there are more benefits to it. You get unlimited coaching sessions and feedback on the recordings you submit.
Course Overview
Don’t you want to know how a course is created on this platform? I really believe that we should check it before using the platform. Here are the sections in which the course is divided-
1. Lesson Plan
The lesson plans on this platform are divided into modules from beginner 1 to Expert 2. Each lesson is divided into three main parts-
- Foundations
- Phrasebook
- Speechling Conversation
The foundation’s sections cover the core topics –
- Numerals
- Verbs
- Dates
- Nouns
- Adjectives
This feature will improve the basic knowledge of the language. Whereas, the phrasebook section covered basic phrases for topics like hotels, clothing, weather, etc. Want to come to Italy? Just take advantage of this Phrasebook.
Speechling Conversations is basically for advanced learners. If you have already reached this level and want to practice thinking or speaking in a targeted language, try this feature.
2. Speaking practice
This was the first exercise I had to go through. It is under the toolbox. There were sentences, recorded by native speakers of Italian. I had to listen to them properly and then record myself saying the same sentence. Once it was done, original sentences were played automatically. It was very confusing for me in starting, but eventually, I started loving it. It helped me to understand if my pronunciation was up to the mark. There was no need to find extra material or go to a different tab to check the recordings. Just relax and do character listening and speaking exercises.
Remember: In starting you may find difficulty in getting the appropriate pronunciation. Try practicing as much as possible.
3. Dictation
Want to improve your listening skills and practice writing? This is a feature that will help you to do it. When I was in this exercise, all I had to do was to listen to the sentence and type it. I could also check if my answer was correct. If there was a wrong answer, I could easily review it later.
Note: I really think this is not nicely created. Try to use its listening practice feature to improve your listening skills. For practice, try using uTalk.
4. Listening Practice
You must wonder if this feature should be before the speaking practice exercise. When I read the name of it, there was the same thought in my mind too. But when I entered the exercise, it was very clear why that was not before the speaking exercises. Basically, there were sentences rather than phrases or words. The exercise is too simple. Just tap on the play option and hear the sentence in the targeted language and its translations in the base language. Now you may have another doubt – is it only for listening purposes? The answer is no. There is also a button to practice. You can record yourself to practice the sentences.
5. Flashcards
When it comes to language learning, flashcards are a must-have feature for it. There are recordings by native speakers. After listening to it you must match them with flashcards. You can also flip the flashcard to get the translations.
6. Multiple Choice Quiz
Of Course, no platform is complete without giving you quizzes. The same is true for Speechling. In this exercise, just listen to the sentence and choose the correct translation. You can also read the sentences.
7. Fill in the blanks
Just like other fill-in-the-blanks exercises, there are sentences with one word missing in it. You can also see a translation. Just fill in the blanks and see if the answer is right or not.
8. Feedback
You can submit the recordings on the platform to get feedback from the native speakers. When you submit it, there will be feedback in 24 hours.
Note: It is only available for paid users.
Alternatives
Although Speechling is a platform for practicing speaking, there are many other aspects to focus on. Thus, here are some alternatives you can try to learn a language from-
1. Duolingo
Do you love games? If so, just give it a try to Duolingo. Duolingo follows the gamified approach, making it a great tool to engage with. Each course has a lot of exercises created like a game. I literally enjoy all of them. There is also a reward system on this platform. For each task, there is a reward for it. The most common reward is the Duolingo gems and Duolingo XP.
2. Pimsleur
Speechling is a great platform to practice speaking. But what about listening skills? Definitely there is a requirement of high listening practice. Pimsleur will do this job for you. As a learner, I believe it is crucial to understand how native speakers talk. To do it I have always focused on Podcasts or the audio lessons. Pimsleur is one such platform I thoroughly enjoy.
3. uTalk
Again a gamified platform but with a different approach. On uTalk, the course is divided into 60 topics. Each topic has multiple exercises in it. They are a great tool to practice listening and speaking skills. But what’s the difference from other platforms? It basically teaches through Visuals. In every exercise, there are visuals. You may either have to match the recording with the visual or speak about what the picture is all about.
4. Tandem
Listening and speaking are two important aspects of the language. Without them, no one can actually communicate. But to check if you are on the right page, it is important to communicate with native speakers. Tandem helps in it. Here you can find an online partner to practice the language with. This is a free tool, with some restrictions. You can only translate a few sentences in a day. To get an unlimited translation, choose the paid version.
Conclusion
Speechling is a great tool to practice speaking. The right pronunciation is very important for a language learner. Speechling helps with this thing. There are both free and paid versions of it. I think the free version works commendably. But if you choose the paid version, there are a lot of things you will be unlocking. The best thing available in the paid version is getting feedback on your recordings from the native speakers. In short, Speechling is really a great tool when it comes to improving your speaking skills.
