I have been learning Spanish for a long time. Throughout my journey, I have used several tools. But one thing that I often find missing is the grammatical aspect. Thus, I try to find some apps that can help me learn grammar. Although it was hard, there were some apps that gave me good grammatical explanations. One such platform that entirely focuses on an important part of grammar is Ella Verbs. Ella Verbs is a platform that helped me learn Spanish verb conjugations. Want to know how? Remember Cooljugator, a tool to learn verb conjugation? The Ella Verbs works similarly but with extra grammatical explanations for only the Spanish language. It’s a great tool to use along with BaseLang. They primarily guide Spanish tenses with a practical approach. Also, the idea behind its icon is amazing. Just like Duolingo has Duo the owl, Ella Verbs has Ella the elephant. The main idea behind keeping these animals as icons is their representation. An elephant has a good memory. As the platform’s main aim is to teach verbs, using an elephant can be a great symbol.

How do I start with the Ella Verbs?

When you open up the official website, there are three tabs on it: Spanish verbs, read reviews, and the About Us page. It’s very easy to get an idea of what will be on the review and about us pages. But the Spanish verbs tab is different. On this tab, I found 580 popular Spanish verbs. However, upon signing up, there are more verbs to learn. Let us see how to start with it.

Start by clicking on the ‘Get Started’ option. 

Then there is a sign-up page. Fill in the necessary details and get a verification email.

After verifying it, go back to the page and refresh it. It will ask you to select which Spanish you want. Remember, this platform covers European and Latin American Spanish.

Select the level you are at. There is an option for both a beginner and a previous learner. 

A new slide will open. Click on ‘get started’.

How the course is created?

Once the account is created, there are four tabs on it. I will describe each of them one by one-

1. Levels tab

In this tab, the course is divided into different levels. There are 31 levels and 8 milestones in total. After a few levels, there is a milestone. Milestones represent the basics of the next levels. Each level covers different verbs. With it, there are different sections covering different aspects of it. The first section is the learning part and the other one is the test part. 

Starting with the learning section, there are 5 sub-sections covering different skills in the first lesson. Below, I have mentioned them one by one:

• Intro: Shows what is covered in this level. It basically gives you an idea of what to expect from it.
• Verb types: This section covers verb types and related technical terms. I find this section useful. It is helpful to know the possible endings in Spanish. I also learned about infinitives and the stem of the language.
• Pronouns: Again, a section that helps me understand how a person is described in Spanish. There was a chart that covered Spanish pronouns with English pronouns. 

• Conjugating AR verb: The first level covers how to use the AR verb. Thus, this section was all about how to conjugate AR verbs. There was a chart that showed how it would be used with the pronoun. After that, a chart shows how to conjugate the verbs according to pronouns. 
• Verb translation: As the focus was on the AR ending, there was a translation chart for the most common verbs that end with AR. 

After completing the learning section, there is a quiz section. In this section, I had to conjugate verbs based on different pronouns. There is a sentence written, and I have to conjugate it. There are 5 such questions. In the beginning, I had a lot of difficulty. There were many wrong answers. But for each wrong answer, I got an explanation for it. It also showed me conjugation steps. If you want, you can customize the learning practice session. Select the practice method of your choice and go on with the test. 

Here is also a verb vocabulary section. It covers flashcards and AR verbs to learn. The best part of it was to choose any level without taking a test. 

2. Progress tab

In this tab, I was able to check my progress. However, please note that I had to take 5 quizzes to unlock it. Having a progress test helps me know where I stand. It helps me stay motivated and learn with more focus. 

3. Custom tab

It is basically the customization options for the language. I could customize the quiz depending on the content type and practice method. There are two options to select from, conjugation and verb vocabulary. Some other additional options are: 

• Tenses
• Pronouns
• Which verb type
• Number of questions

4. Verbs tab

It’s a huge library of Spanish verbs. The list is created on the basis of alphabetic order. It allowed me to search for the verb by myself or choose from the list. In the beginning, it gave me a top 100 list. To get the list of verbs, I had to buy the subscription plan. In total, it has 2100 verbs. Purchase the plan and get them all. 

On clicking each verb, there is a meaning of it on the screen. Additionally, it also shows how conjugation will happen in every tense for each pronoun. 

Is Ella Verbs free?

Ella Verbs offers some limited free content. Only 7 lessons and the first 2 milestones are free to use. After that, all the lessons are paid. Even to access the whole list of words, a subscription is required. There are two types of plans:

Ella Verbs Review: Is it worthy?

Grammar is one such aspect that is not commonly considered by most language-learning platforms. Ella Verbs focuses on an important part of grammar, which is verb conjugation. Though the platform is paid, there is limited free content. I didn’t find the pricing of the platform costlier. Paying $29.99 per year is not a huge cost. However, if you do not want to pay, try Cooljugator. Also, the biggest drawback of this platform is its teaching style. It just has text-form content.

There are no engaging videos or audio lessons. If you are not on a budget and are okay with text-based content, definitely give it a try. It’s an amazing platform with multiple features. To make it more clear, let me share the benefits and drawbacks of it:

Baselang is a platform that provides different teaching styles. It basically offers live classes to learners learning Spanish. The teachers basically help to practice conversational skills. Without knowing the basics of the language, no one can learn the grammar or have a conversation in a language. Duolingo is the platform that provides a course to teach the basics of the language. It’s like a gamified platform, where each lesson is a set of game-based exercises. It also gave me rewards for every task I completed. I think it is a way to help me stay motivated. 

3. Tandem

Tandem is a great way to get connected with other native speakers. I created my profile, and based on the information added, I got the list of profiles. All I had to do was select one and get into the conversation. Two in-build features helped me: translation and auto-corrections. It’s a free platform but with limited translations. 

Conclusion

Ella Verbs is a great platform to learn Spanish conjugations. Only the first seven levels and 2 milestones are free. However, remember, only the paid plan is worth it. There are so many verbs that you get with the conjugations for different pronouns and tenses. It follows a text-based approach. There are no engaging visuals or videos. This platform is perfect for anyone learning basic Spanish conjugation. However, if your aim is to practice conversation, I recommend checking some other alternatives.
