Fluent Forever Review 2024: Should You Use It? (+ Alternatives)
Every language-learning app has a story behind it. Fluent Forever also has one. The creator of it once shared how bad his experiences were when he was learning a language. After so many experiences, one thing that he learned was that learning a language needs a lot of exposure. So he created the Fluent Forever app. As this app was created by a language learner himself, I really wanted to give it a try.
You may also have the same feeling about it. I think sharing my experience with you will be the cherry on top of the cake for you. Therefore, read this Fluent Forever review and see if it will work for you.
Quick Takeaways
- The platform follows a different methodology that includes teaching vocabulary and pronunciation with words and sounds.
- There are online coaching classes where you can practice with the tutors.
- It only has 12 languages to offer.
What’s the methodology behind the Fluent Forever platform?
Fluent Forever follows a very basic metrology used in a book of a similar name by Wyner. The book focuses on the way to make you understand how to learn any language faster and never forget it. The app follows different steps to completely teach you a language-
- Providing pronunciation lessons
- Learning vocabulary with images
- Involving grammar naturally
- Practicing fluency with the help of native tutors
All these steps are base of the app. It helped me to develop a great knowledge of the language I was learning. Please note that the fourth step i.e. live classes was not active before. It has recently been activated on the platform. According to the official website, it is supposed to teach us a language we never forget. But is it true? I think, it somewhere, helps to memorize. There is a Spaced repetition system that helps to memorize the words. SRS is the proven method to remember words easily.
Pricing of Fluent Forever
The good news for you is that the platform is free to use. But every free thing has its own drawbacks. The same is the case for this platform. There are limitations on some of the features. To unlock them, we need to take the subscription plan. There are three types of plans on this platform-
Types of plans | Intro | Get fluent | Base |
Time duration | Monthly | Annually | 6-months |
Pricing | $9.99 | $95.88 | $53.94 |
If you are interested in taking the online coaching classes, the prices are different. The following table shows the pricing of plans depending on the duration of the classes-
Once a week | Twice a week | Every weekday |
$99 | $185 | $275 |

Languages offered on Fluent Forever
The biggest drawback of this platform according to me is the availability of less number of languages. There are total languages available on the platform, which I have discussed in the table below-
German | Italian | Korean | Russian |
Spanish LA | French | Portuguese | Dutch |
Castilian Spanish | Japanese | Hebrew | Mandarin |
Course Overview
Before choosing any platform it is important to understand what we will get from it. To know it, it is important to understand what the platform looks like. Therefore, here I have discussed each tab that you get with it-
1. Home Tab
There are four tabs on this platform. The first one is the home tab. It is the one where the main content is divided into different sections. In the very first lesson of starting, there was a short video guide that helped me to understand how the platform works. After that different exercises help to develop language skills-
a. Learning vocabulary
This was a section where I could find the translation of the words I wanted to.
Once the translation was chosen, there was a right pronunciation of it. It also gave the option to choose the image of the words searched. It also gave me the option of creating a flashcard on my own. When the words were completely learned, it was time to improve the pronunciation.
b. Improving pronunciation
One thing that I noticed in most of the language learning platforms was teaching pronunciation was done directly through using the words. This platform was different from others. I was taught the pronunciation of the sounds first. After that, there was a shift in basic words in it.
These two were the main parts of each section. At the end of the home tab, there were different practice exercises which were again related to the content studied in the sections above. Further, I have discussed various types of exercises that help me to learn the language properly-
c. Quick Chat
You must have seen some conversational practice platforms, where you are taught in a way that you are in a conversation with another person. This platform also has conversation practices but in a different style. In this exercise, I got a list of distinct scenarios. Each scenario works differently. Some of the themes of Scenarios are-
- Casual
- Weather
- Making plans
- Eating, etc.
d. Add your content
As I mentioned above, this platform also helped me to create my own vocabulary list. This exercise was further divided into two sections – English and Spanish translations. I had to enter both things on my own. Let me share a quick hack to use here. Get the translations and try to learn them. Once they are clean in your mind, go to this section and add both of them. Whenever I use this platform, I follow this technique. It helps me to quickly remember what I have learned so far.
e. Review flashcard
As the name suggests, this section contains the words, I have added to my list. There were pictures of the words I added to the list. I have to click on them and get the right word for it.
f. Everyday topics
This is for those who really want to know how to communicate with a native speaker. In this section, I got multiple topics to select from. Some of the topics were:
- Shopping
- Transportation
- Restaurant
Once I chose the topic of my choice, I saw there were various questions in it. On selecting a specific question, I heard the right pronunciation for it.
g. Grammar
This is the section that is for the premium users. It helps me a lot in learning the basic grammar rules. How to make a sentence? What are the articles used in a language? etc., was all covered. One factor that I felt missing was the knowledge of using verb conjugation. If you want to know more about it, Cooljugator is a tool to use.
h. Achievement
At the top of the homepage tab, there was an achievement section. In this section, there were achievements for different sets of exercises. I don’t feel this section to be very helpful. It’s because it does not add anything new to the learning content. However, it’s a perfect way to stay motivated while learning a new language.
2. Profile tab
The third tab on this platform is the profile tab. Like any other profile tab, it helps to know the progress in a language. I could see the achievements that I unlocked on it. There is also a streak score. It is basically the score that represents the number of days you have constantly used it. In short, it’s a similar version of the Duolingo Streek score. If you are a subscriber, more features are waiting ahead. With a subscription, I could check my review score and also change the difficulty level.
3. Settings
The last tab on this platform is the settings tab. It is the tab on which I have multiple options. There was also an option for the support system. The subscription to the platform gave me the ability to change the language and the ability to reset all data.
4. Testing tab
In this tab, I could test my knowledge of the language. The interface is so cool. There is a brain-like character which is known as Brian. It asked me to choose the format of the tests. There were two types of tests –
- Get clues
- Give clues
After selecting the method, now was the time to start taking part in the tests. These tests are really amazing. The only thing I wish could be improved was the number of tests taken. It only allowed me to take 1 test per day. Additionally, there were 6 chances that I got in a single test. Honestly, It was something better than the Duolingo heart system where I only got 4 chances. Lastly, if we leave the game early, we lose.
Update: This tab is no more available on the platform.
Fluent Forever review: Should you use Fluent Forever?
Well, the first thing I will say is that every platform has something unique to offer. Fluent Forever is no different. It has a lot of interesting features that helped me in learning German efficiently. One of the sections I loved the most, was the way it teaches pronunciation. Unlike other platforms, it teaches the pronunciation of sounds before the words and phrases. However, I feel that there was very little content for advanced learners. I have created a table below to understand the advantages and disadvantages of using Fluent Forever:
Pros | Cons |
Teaches pronunciations of the sounds first. | There was less content for advanced learners. |
Allow me to create flashcards by myself. | Some interesting features were only available for subscribed people. |
The test section helps to determine where I stand | Less languages to offer. |
What are the alternatives for Fluent Forever?
I never get satisfied with just a single app. There is always another platform that I look to learn a new language. You may also not be fully satisfied with Fluent forever. Thus, I am sharing some apps that I always look at
1. Duolingo – Best for beginners
It’s a perfect choice for anyone who loves to learn with a Gamified approach. Each exercise I performed gave me some additional rewards like XP and Gems. The platform follows a basic structure where the course is divided into units, which include a set of lessons. It also gives reminders with the help of Duo. Thus, there is no way of getting demotivated.
2. Tandem – Practice with native speakers
Tandem is the platform that helped me to practice with native speakers. It’s like a program where I can help them learn my native language and vice versa. I love this platform as it gives me multiple friends from different nations.
3. Memrise – Learning Memrise
Memrise was earlier known for community flashcards. You were allowed to make flashcards and use the other user’s deck. But now the platform has changed. There is a particular course that is created to teach a new language.
Conclusion
Fluent Forever is a platform that follows a similar approach to a book with the same name. It has a lot of interesting features that helped me learn the language. I have sections to practice reading, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. However, my personal favorite was the pronunciation exercises. These exercises helped me improve my pronunciation. There was no direct pronunciation of words and phrases. Overall, my experience was good, but I would say there is no content specifically tailored for advanced learners.
