Kwiziq Review 2024: An App to Learn French and Spanish
Quizzes were the least interesting thing for me when I was in college. I didn’t enjoy taking the quizzes earlier, but eventually, I started loving it. Since I started learning languages, quizzes were something important to me. It was especially true when I started learning Spanish and French. They were the first two languages of my journey. I still try to take tests in these two languages to check my level. Recently, I got my hands on Kwiziq.
It is a platform that is specially created for testing both of them. There is no way of using any other app to test my skills. Want to know why? It’s because of the way it is created. Read how it helped me in my journey in the Kwiziq review below.
Quick Takeaways
- Kwiziq is a platform that helps in testing Spanish and French language skills.
- There are so many quizzes to test the knowledge.
- The free version has limited number of questions. To get the unlimited questions, get the subscription plan.
What is Kwiziq?
If you pronounce Kwiziq, you must know how the name was invented. It is derived from the literal pronunciation of quizzes i.e. ‘Kwizzes’. This also shows how the lessons are created. They are full of interesting quizzes. According to Kiwiziq:
Kwiziq is an artificially intelligent (AI) ‘language coach’ for people learning a second language.
This platform is the one that helps in improving the Spanish and French languages.
Remember: The platform is not about testing the language but also improving the areas where you are bad.
When I used this platform, there were some details that I must mention on the platform. Based on that, the platform plans for me to learn the language properly. I believe these two languages are the most important second languages. This could be a possible reason why the platform only offers these two languages.
Is Kwiziq Free?
There is a free and paid version of this platform. But like many other platforms, there is limited content with the free version. In the free version, I only get 10 free questions for each language. If you want more than 10 questions, upgrade to a subscription plan. The subscription plan depends upon the duration of it. Below, I have added a table that explains the pricing of the plans-
Type of plan | Pricing |
Monthly | $22.79 |
3- months | $56.97 ($18.99 per month) |
Annually | $143.88 ($11.99 per month) |
Twice a year | $222.76 (&9.49 per month) |
Course Overview
Let me give you an idea of how the course works. I use it for the Spanish language. As I had learned it, I could easily check if it is worth it or not. Below I have discussed the course in different sections which will make it easy for you to understand it.
Placement test
The course started with a placement test. A placement test is the one that helps to check the level I am at. The placement test was quite accurate. I have taken the official CEFR test in the Spanish language. As it is the official test, it is the most reliable one. I have taken placement tests on many other platforms. Out of them all, the placement test for Kiwiziq placed me at a similar level to the official test. Not only this, there is an extra benefit of taking this placement test. It offers feedback on the result of it.
You may think that there are many placement test that offers this feature. Yes, it does, but without showing where I was wrong. The results are broken down into different sections created in the form of a comparison table. Below I have mentioned these sections:
- Levels
- Score
- Correct answers
- Incorrect answers
- Not answered
- and Results
This is not only the feature that I received with it. It also had explanations for the questions that were asked in the test. In short, this feature is a total pass for me.
Kwizzes
After the placement level, it had a section called Kwizzes. It is the one where I got an experience of how the platform will work. There are two ways to access them:
- Start with the recommended test at the top of the dashboard
- Take the test by foxing on a specific level.
I started with the recommended test. It is because the pre-determined path is always more useful than choosing by yourself. I found the questions were similar to fill-in-the-blank exercises that I got in the placement test. Once I completed it, there were rewards for it. After the rewards, there are results that you can check on. It is created in a similar manner to the placement test.
Kwiziq Lessons
Here I will help you to understand how the lessons are created. As I told you, this platform not only tests my language but also helps in improve it. Based on the placement test, I was recommended with some lessons. There is a study plan which is a group of 10 lessons each. It covers the points that I needed to improve the one. Again it gives the flexibility of choosing any lesson first. However, as usual, I started from the beginning. It is not important to start from starting. If you think, the first lesson is too easy for you, skip it.
Each lesson is a set of examples and explanations with exceptions and relevant examples. The best part of the lessons was the highlighting of the important things from different colors. Of course, it attracted my attention to important aspects of the language.
At the end of each lesson, there is a mini-quiz. It only consists of two questions.
Important: If you are a free user, these two questions will also count toward your free limit.
Notebook
The next feature that I received with this course was the notebook feature. It was the one where I could keep track of the things I had done. In general, when we learn a new language, it is very common to forget the concepts or some specific topics. But with the notebook section of the platform, it was easy for me to revise them. I could add the topics and the quizzes on the platform. This feature makes it easy for me to revise the concepts later on. I could save the track of the words and phrases where I was wrong.
Note: This feature is no more available on the platform
Brainmap
Think, what if we could remember how much progress we had made while learning the lessons? It would be the best part of learning the language. This is exactly what this platform gave me. The brainmap is a feature that showed me how much I have learned in Spanish. One of the users also shared his experience by explaining this map is a way to see inside the brain.
It’s just like a dashboard but created more interactively. There will be different concepts with in the whole map. Go through it and check the changing of the colors every time you learn the concept. This map is an actual representation of the progress I made in my whole journey.
Listening exercise
Whenever you watch a show or a video in a different language, it is tough to understand what is going on. Undoubtedly the level of the language used is the advanced level. There are many ways to improve the understanding like listening to Spanish and French podcasts. But this app offers a way better than it. There is an option to decide the level you want to practice. As my level was B2, I chose it as my level. Then I had to choose a topic to practice.
In most of the listening exercises, there is audio and transcript along it. However, this is not the case for this platform. It works differently. Before providing the audio, there is a short summary of it. After that, the whole audio is there. Listen to it before listening to it in chunks.
When I listened to it, I was asked to transcribe the phrases. These phrases were small and some also had hints with it. Once I submit my answers, they compare them and give the results.
Reading practices
Reading practice is different from listening practice. Here, there are no exercises. You can only practice with the help of translations. Everything that you read will also have a grammar focus. I really like the idea of trying to read on your own. All I had to do was click on the phrase and get the translation of it. The text also has an audio version, which is divided into small phrases. Everytime I click on it, I get English translations of it. It also had related grammar lessons. However, there was no interactive lesson.
Speaking Exercises
Sadly it is a major drawback of the platform. Speaking practice is limited on this platform. It offers information related to the best face on how to practice picking skills. Although it does not have a speaking exercise, it offers a list having free and paid language resources where I could practice with real people. Some additional notes explain what you mean by fluent.
Writing Exercise
When you practice something, one this is the most required is the feedback. This is what the platform works on. I got a translated page, one at a time. It was easy for me to check the right translation as I went along with it. This helped in self-assessing each answer.
In each exercise, the context I had to translate was small. Once I submitted my answer, it was time to compare with the correct answers. Fortunately, I could score every question correctly.
Based on the performance, I had to give scores to myself for each translation I completed. There are grammar lessons as well. I think it’s the best way to understand why the words are used in a particular manner. Once the short translations are done, now is the time to get the full translated text.
Kwiziq Review: Is it worth it?
Yes, it is a good platform to learn French and Spanish. However, if you just want to learn the vocabulary, it may not be a useful platform for you. This platform has plenty of grammatical tips for both languages. If you are willing to learn grammar, then taking the subscription plan of the platform is worth it. However, you can always check some other alternatives for it.
Alternatives of Kwiziq
Since It does not offer speaking exercises, you must want to practice it more. I am providing you with some alternatives where you can improve your pronunciation skills-
1. Tandem
Although I love to make new friends, I have always wanted to be friends with people all over the world. Tandem allowed me to do that. It is a platform that has a community of language learners. I have used this platform to practice multiple languages with native speakers. There are two inbuilt features – Autocorrections and Translations, that helped me to communicate with them easily.
2. Baselang
Baselang is an app that is specially designed for learning Spanish. It is the one that has multiple tutors to teach the French language. Two basic subscription plans helped me to connect with the tutors – the grammarless plan and the real-world plan. I would suggest you use the real-world plan on this platform to get the most out of it.
3. iTalki
iTalki is the best live teaching platform. It has multiple tutors depending upon your learning style. I have used this platform to learn German. There are two types of tutors on this platform – professionals and community. Professionals are the ones having great experience and related documents. Whereas, community tutors have less experience and no related documents at all. Of course, it does not mean that community tutors are bad at teaching. I have seen many community tutors are better than professional tutors.
Conclusion
Kwiziq is a platform that is specifically designed for testing French and Spanish languages. It is the platform that has quizzes at each stage of the platform. Anybody who loves taking quizzes or assessments will enjoy this platform. I think the platform really does the job commendably. It not only tests the language level but also studies the grammar topic. The placement test makes it the best option for a person who is here to test their knowledge. Despite being a great resource to practice the language, it does not have anything interactive. Also, the speaking exercises are really bad. There is not much to practice.
