What is Langauge Transfer?

Language transfer is an app that provides a lot of order-based courses for different languages. It provides real-life experience for language learning. All you have to do is to listen, pause, think, and repeat it. The platform follows to thinking approach, making it a perfect tool for those who love engaging contact. There will be a parallel connection with the native and targeted language. It also teaches the differences and similarities between the two languages at the same time. Language transfer is a perfect choice for anyone who wants to focus on spoken skills.

What are the languages offered?

There are only 8 languages offered on this platform. Below I am adding the names of the languages along with the number of lessons in them-

Name of the languageNumber of lessons in it
Greek120
Swahili110
Spanish90
German50
Italian45
Turkish44
French 40
Arabic38

There is also a special course designed for Spanish native speakers, that is to learn English. It has 40 lessons on it. From the table itself, it is very clear that Green has the maximum number of lessons and Arabic has the least number of lessons.

It was really interesting to find that the Greek course has the highest number of lessons. Thus, I wanted to check it once.

Pricing of the course

The courses on this platform are absolutely free. It means there is no cost for listing them. However, it has the option of providing some donations to the host. If you like the course, provide some donations. Of course, it’s a totally optional thing.

Starting with Language Transfer

It is very easy to start with it. The platform provides free courses. When I visit the official website, I get direct links for the language I want to learn. However, on scrolling down, there are multiple courses on it. When I reached the decided course, I got the option to choose where to listen to these episodes. It allowed me to choose on the official platform, SoundCloud, or via YouTube playlist. In fact, it also gave me the option to download the audio on my laptop.

All the episodes or the lessons of this audiobased platform gave me the basic language understanding. In each episode, there is a detailed explanation of different aspects of the language. It includes vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation of the language. In starting, the creator Mihalis, will ask questions on the content studied. The main Idea behind it is to give us real classroom experience.

It also helps me to interact and engage with the material on the platform. I had to write the words, structure, and sentences that I encountered in the lessons.

What do the lessons look like on Langauge transfer?

The lessons can be boring for a person who doesn’t love to listen the podcasts. These lessons are created for non-native speakers. I think these lessons are not good for intermediate learners. This is because beginners don’t need to practice the pronunciation of the language instantly. And lesson created for non-native speakers have less pronunciation practice. In fact, he himself says that pronunciations should be done based on native speakers.

In the first few lessons, I was allowed to learn quiet sentences, words, and grammatical points. Though it is done slowly, but can help a lot. Each lesson is interrelated to each other. This encourages most of the learners to listen to all the lessons. The lessons are interactive in nature and focus on what you talk about. There are so many explanations given by the narrators. It was quite crazy to find that within no time I could understand how to ask questions in Greek.

Not only this, it also teaches how to give commands and build up sentences. This is what we call the Thinking method. The lessons are like interactions between the host and the students themselves. In fact, after 13-14 audio lessons, I could know the complex sentences.

There is no waste of time during the lessons. Each episode is 6-8 minutes and every second is worth it. All the aspects are taught for equal amounts of time. It can be a perfect way to teach the language than focusing on different aspects in different sections. In a particular lesson, the student was asked to repeat the words till she achieved the actual pronunciations.

It teaches the importance of the proverbs used in the language. The host covers a lot of lessons explaining it. One thing that I was really shocked about was teaching the yes or no after completing the few lessons. The course starts by teaching introduction and greetings, it is very tough to name each lesson. It is because, the lessons teach a mixture of grammar, vocabulary, etc. It’s like using the content to start up the language journey. Unlike other platforms, it does not make fake promises to make you an expert in the language.

There are no exercises at all. It makes the lessons boring. As a learner, I always try to test myself. But with language transfer, I have no such way to do that. For this platform, I can say it is a good alternative language resource if you are looking for podcasts to learn the language.

Language transfer review: Should you use it?

Language transfer platform follows a special approach known as The Thinking Method. All the courses follow the audio-based approach following the introduction of the language. These are the recordings of the teacher and the students themselves.  It gives a deep understanding of the content and also shows the problems people face while learning a particular language. Unlike many other platforms, there are no practical exercises. All you have to do is to listen to the conversations. It might be boring for you. However, as a beginner, it can be a great choice to use. If you are looking to improve your conversational skills, it might help you.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of the platform?

Alternatives to Language Transfer

The lessons on the platform may be boring or less engaging many times. In such a case, it is important to check some alternatives. Thus, I have shared some other and more effective tools for you-

1. Pimsleur

Pimsleur is also an audio-based approach but has more detailed lessons. Each lesson has a practice exercise along with it, keeping the learner engaged. If you are looking for something just to listen to, this can be a better platform to use.

2. Duolingo

Duolingo is a free tool to use and follows the gamified approach to teaching the language. This tool follows a particular path where the course is divided into sections. Each section covers multiple units, which is further a set of lessons. There are so many features like Duolingo XP and Duolingo gems, that kept me motivated to complete the lessons faster.

3. LingoDeer

I prefer using this platform for languages that have a different writing style. It is because this is the only platform that starts its course by teaching the first thing of the language i.e. writing the characters. After that, the lessons on the platform follow a basic path. Each lesson is created in a similar manner to Duolingo i.e. engaging and interactive.

4. Tandem

Tandem is a platform that follows an approach of practicing communicational skills with native speakers. The platform allowed me to connect with them online. I can send them message requests and connect through voice and video calls. There are two inbuilt features – translations and autocorrect. Both the features helped me to have easy conversations with each other.

Conclusion

Language Transfer is a platform that offers audio lessons and follows the Thinking Method. This approach makes you think more deeply about the concepts. The main drawback of this platform is the lack of practice exercises. It relies on listening to conversations between the teacher and the student. If you’re traveling or doing other work, you can simply listen to the episodes. They are free to use and discuss the challenges that language learners might face. However, to get a deeper understanding of the language, check out some alternatives.
