What is LingoPie?

LingoPie is a platform that shows the video with the help of dual-language subtitles and transcripts in the target language. You will also get the meaning of the words. To do so, click on the word in the subtitles and get the meaning of it. Collect the words from these videos and get tests on them. In fact, the platform states this statement itself-

The world’s only language learning application that uses real TV shows and movies to help you learn a new language. Its main aim is to make it accessible at each level. LingoPie keeps on updating the shows regularly.

LingoPie Languages

At present, there are only 9 languages on the platform. Below I have mentioned all of them-

Pricing

There are three different features on the platform. I have mentioned all the plans in the table below-

Type of PlanPricing
3 months Plan$12 per month
Yearly $5.99 per month
Lifetime subscription $199

LingoPie Review: Is it worth it?

There are a lot of things that I like about it. The first good thing about this platform is the subscription price of it. There is less than $6 per month. All the videos and movies are so interesting in nature. There is no particular curriculum for the platform. If you want to get engaged with the lessons, this is a perfect place. As it is more like a Netflix, there is no particular way path to follow. Remember: It is the perfect choice for intermediate and advanced-level learners. If you have already learned the basics, involve this in your learning language. Next time when you hear watching movies or series is a waste of time, show them this platform.

Below I have given a short comparison about what I like and dislike about it.

What I like

  • A lot of videos, shows, and listening options are available online.
  • There are a lot of vocabulary-learning features on the platform.
  • It has opportunities to practice speaking.
  • There is a video-based dictionary for contextual learners.
  • Less private classes.

What I dislike

  • There is very little grammatical knowledge.
  • Not all languages have similar features (Especially in the case of China).
  • Despite having different tabs for all the games, the way of creating them is the same.
  • Below I have discussed how the whole course is created to understand how it works.

Course Overview of Lingopie

After using it, I can compare Lingopie to Netflix. Netflix is used for entertainment purposes but Lingopie is Netflix for Education. How? Let me show you by discussing how the course is created. Here are the features you get with each course-

1. A lot of shows, movies, and videos

LingoPie Review: Netflix for Education

There are so many shows on this platform which is the main attraction of it. It not only has English shows but also is translated into different languages. For example, you can watch anime in Japanese and English. Switching between both languages is super easy. Therefore if you think you are having difficulty understanding the dialogue switch to the English language. As the videos and the shows have native speakers in them, it becomes easy to understand how the native speakers talk.

2. Multiple listening options

There are different listening options available on the platform including music, Podcasts, and audiobooks. For music, I noticed that most of them were categorized in multiple niches like romantic songs, party songs, sad songs, etc. In short, it make sure to bring the music according to your mood. I felt like I was scrolling Spotify. If you are traveling or doing some things that do not require much focus level, you can listen to the music along with it. In addition to the music, there are audiobooks and podcasts. Both of them can help you in understanding how the native speakers talk. Again just like the music, there are multiple categories of the podcast and Audi books.

There is also a kid section for some languages. When you click on it, The other sections will disappear. If your kid is not interested in doing the activities you can easily exit the kid’s section to get the adult-level content. However, I think using the kids section especially when you are a beginner, can help a lot.

3. Playback features

LingoPie Review: Netflix for Education

Some integrated features make my learning more convenient. As mentioned above, all the videos have subtitles with it. This is the first built-in feature of the platform. Next is the changing speed of the video. If you find it hard, just Slow down the speed to understand what they are saying.

While the video is playing, there is a sidebar with three sections in it:

a. Scripts

The script tab is the one that shows the transcript in it. Scroll down to read it fully. If you think a word is hard, click on it to get the meaning. This is another feature of the platform.

There were some parts that I felt were too easy for me. I decided to skip that part. Further, I noticed that the words that were of my level were under the star section. If you are not able to understand which word you should focus on, this is a feature for you.

b. Vocabulary

When you click the word in the script it will be added to the vocabula list for that video. But what if you need to see the vocabulary added for all the videos? For that, my vocab is the tab needed. Here I could find all the words collected from all the videos. Of course, you can delete the words that you have already learned. Once you tap on the word, it will give the last video where you have seen that word.

In short, you can get an idea of how many times you have reviewed it. The best part of it was that when I gathered a lot of words in that section, it unlocked a quiz mode. This exercise is basically multiple choice-based questions. In it, there is a video, with the targeted language and highlighted keyword. Click on it and choose the right meaning of that word. The quiz can be started at any time of your choice.

c. Grammar

This section covers the grammatical explanation of any line from the transcript. When I first saw it, I was really impressed by the fact that they have added grammar to the platform. It is because most of the platforms fail to do that. Unfortunately, I felt there was no benefit in providing this section. This is because the explanations are AI-generated and not given from language exports. You may think what’s wrong with it? Here is a brief explanation about it. Air can be very wrong when it comes to grammatical explanations and language learning. I have seen it by myself when I was learning German. I used this platform to learn Russian.

Usually, I used to use three platforms together to learn a language. Russia also follows the same approach. I used another platform, that had a specific focus on teaching grammar. From that, it was very evident that AI-generated explanations are not trusted. Additionally, some languages do not have detailed explanations in it. In one of the sentences, I find that the noun used in it is plural in nature.

But it was hard to determine the right tense of it. The grammatical section helps in breaking down the sentence into small components. There is a special color coding pattern that helps to know the right grammatical explanation. If it makes you confused about the explanations, you can turn this off by going on the Chrome browser.

4. Review Features

Well, it’s time to review each word saved by you. I think this is a superb feature that helps to evaluate our understanding level. In this exercise, I had to record the sentence and then hear it from the video. If you are already following a platform where speaking skills are not considered, make sure to check this one. There are three games to review the word you have added:

  • Flashcards review
  • Pop Quiz
  • Word master

All three games have the same way to take. You need to choose the right meaning from the four options given on the screen. The way of learning is awesome, but making them three different exercises is useless.  If the way of creating them is also different then having them will make a great impact on your learning.

5. Phrasebook

The next feature that I personally enjoy a lot is a Phrasebook. When I saw this tab, the first thing that came to my mind was a normal dictionary. Honestly, I did even not use it at the beginning. Luckily, I had to try it because of a word that was hard for me. The moment I opened the tab, I was so surprised with the interface it had. It does not have a normal dictionary but a video-based dictionary. In fact, the section itself states that:

This dictionary is available even without creating an app. The word you are stuck at can be learned in different languages. There is also a sentence clip from the TV show you have watched. To take benefit from it, you must open it on another tab.

6. Private and group lessons

This is an option that is not currently available for every language. You can either choose live classes in a group session or a one-on-one session. These classes are in the same area where most of the videos are seen. It is very disappointing as it is not in the section where it should be. Also, it is very unclear whether this service is paid or not. I check this platform for Spanish too. The life classes for 45 minutes were $80. However, the platform also offers of free trial with the private tutor.

Alternatives for LingoPie

Of course, it is an exciting way to learn a language. I would have never ever thought that I would be using Netflix to learn a language. But as I already said, I was never alive only on one platform to learn the language. If you are like me, you may want to know some alternatives for it. Thus, here I have mentioned some of the alternative you can use along with it-

a. Tandem

It is a platform that helps me to connect with other native speakers all over the world. Tandem is a language exchange program that helps practice language skills with real native speakers. If you are planning to travel somewhere, use this platform to make friends from that area.

b. iTalki

I don’t think there is a better way to learn a language than learning through a tutor. If you also agree with me, here is a great option for you. iTalki is a platform that is well-known for its teaching services. There are a lot of tutors that will help in learning a particular language with ease. This platform has tutors according to your budget. You can filter the tutors based on experience and prices.

c. Duolingo

Do you know why I started learning the language? It’s because of Duolingo. It is the perfect platform for a new language learner. Some multiple features and courses keep you engaged with the content. The exercises are created in a way that you feel it is like a game. Every time you play and complete it, you win Duolingo gems. Additionally, there are Duolingo leagues where you compete with others.

Conclusion

I had never thought that I could use Netflix to learn the language. But after using Lingopie, this thing also came true. There were so many shows and videos that I could watch in both English and the language I was learning. This is a fantastic way to learn the language on my own. In addition to that, there are a lot of speaking practice options on the platform. All I have to do is listen to the dialogue and repeat them. There is also a video dictionary. In it, there is a word and a short video clip in which the word is spoken. In short and engaging approach to achieve the final goal.

FAQs

Can you become fluent with Lingopie?

No, you can not become fluent with the Lingopie app. Undoubtedly it is a great platform to learn the language. But there is no conversational practice on it. Thus, you must try to use two to three platforms together to become fluent in it.
