Have you ever thought you can get the classroom feeling while sitting in the house? It has become easy with the help of video conferencing platforms. Now we can directly have conversations with tutors regarding anything we want. It has been the biggest boon in the world of language learning. Today, I thought to share my experience with one such platform which was Live Lingua. It’s a platform that connected me with some random tutors. But was it really useful? Let us find out in the Live Lingua review below.
Quick Takeaways
- Live Lingua is a platform that will connect you with a language tutor in one-on-one classes.
- There are only 7 languages that are learned on this platform.
- The platform not only teaches through life classes but there are multiple tools to learn it.
What is Live Lingua?
Live Lingua is more like a school that connects you with a tutor on a one-on-one basis. It’s a boutique online language school. The tutors on this platform are certified and provide personalized services. Its aim is to give more personal experience than live teaching platforms. There are lessons in different languages and various courses. Although I have clearly mentioned the basic idea of how the platform works, it’s important to know what a Boutique language school is.
What is a Boutique language school?
It is the school that helps to keep things personal. As Live Lingua absolutely does this thing personaly, it is known as a Boutique online language school. Even, according to its official website, they don’t have any interest in becoming a massive language learning platform. Their main focus is to provide a personalized, yet high-quality learning experience. The platform uses Skype lessons to teach the lessons.
How to register on it?
Here are the steps to register with the Live Lingua platform-
Open the official platform, and select the language you want to learn. When done, click on Get Started. You can also tap on try a 1 on 1 lesson for free.
Choose your age.
Select the date of taking the free trial.
Confirm the timings.
Add the required details and click on book my free lessons.
After that, there will be multiple emails to confirm your sign-up process. I received five emails for just completing the signup process. Below I have mentioned the reasons for each email-
- Email-1: Welcome email to know the days and Times for your trial classes
- Email-2: A free student account
- Email-3: Confirming the date and time of your trial class
- Email-4: Details of how to install and set up the Skype lessons
- Email-5: This is the reminder email of the classroom. You will get this email 3 times:- The day before the lesson, The day of the lesson, and 15 minutes before the lesson.
It may be frustrating for you. But trust me, there was nothing inappropriate in it.
Languages
If you have ever tried a live teaching platform like Preply, there is one common thing – more languages. But this is not the same case for Live Lingua. There are only 7 languages on the platform which are mentioned below-
- English
- Spanish
- French
- Italian
- Japanese
- Portuguese
- German
Pricing
The pricing on this platform is different from the other language learning platforms. On this platform, the pricing depends upon the language you are studying. It also depends upon other factors like standard practice, exam preparation, specialization, etc. The prices of some languages may start from $27.00 and others might be from $54.00 per hour. Depending upon the number of hours selected, you may get a discount.
What are the language levels on this platform?
The platform is based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages system. The evolution is done based on speaking, listening, writing, and reading proficiency. In this platform, you will see that after every 20 hours of lessons, the tutor will evaluate language proficiency based on ACTFL criteria. This was the thing that I liked about the platform. There is nothing more great than getting to know the progress you are making.
Course Overview
When we are reviewing the platform, it’s very important to understand how the course for the lessons is created. Therefore here I will discuss how the lessons were and also the tools that helped me to learn the language-
Lessons
It’s common to get obstacles at the start. I also faced the same situation. In the beginning, it was very hard for me, but with time it was really a good experience. My first two classes went quite well. However, in my third class, there were so many problems. I receive an email about the class being canceled. The email stated that there was some technical issue due to which it was done.
The same thing happened to me in my 6th or 7th lesson. But this time the teacher requested me to have an audio call. I thought it would be difficult to cope with an audio-based lesson. But luckily it was easy for me as I had some knowledge of French.
After these two incidents, there were no such hurdles in my journey. In some starting lessons, the tutor helped me to practice conversation. But after that, there were some exercises that I had to go through. The teacher also gives me course material, despite not getting it through the platform. After completing the lesson, you also get an email like a Trial Class Report.
Learning tools
Every platform uses its own set of tools to teach a new language. When I was learning Italian, there were so many tools that helped me in learning it. Below I have discussed these tools in detail-
1. Verb Handouts
It allows reading the verbs and understanding how they work in the Italian language. There are more than 600 verbs which are discussed through mini multiple choice questions.
2. Verb conjugation practice
The next section provides information about the most important aspect which is the subject of verb conjugation. There are explanations of what verb conjugation is. There are also explanations on how they work. When you get an idea of what they are, there will be MCQ exercises to test the knowledge.
3. Grammar explanations
Again the section follows a similar style but focuses on Grammar. There are categories to focus on Grammar elements to practice the most.
4. Vocabulary Builder
Building up vocabulary knowledge is important. This feature is a great resource for you. I got 30 lists of vocabulary words that are organized by the subject. You can download these lists either by individual subject or by all the vocabulary lists.
5. Learning style quiz
I am sure you must have understood what the section will be about. This section is basically a quiz that helped me to determine the types of learners you are and your personality type. The learning style of everyone is different. Therefore it is important to understand one’s learning style. This section gives the tutor an understanding of your learning style.
6. Free courses
Who does not love getting something free? I love it when I get something free. Getting a free language course always makes me feel motivated. Every language has its own set of courses, ebooks, and audio clips. The number may vary. Yes, it’s an amazing opportunity. Also, all the resources are budget-friendly. It means anyone can afford it.
Live Lingua Project
There is a lot of free material on this platform. However, there is a lot of free study material that is available through the live lingua projects. It’s like a hub of resources to teach you a new language. The mission of the platform itself states that it wants to make language learning accessible to everyone. When I completed my Italian course, I was really excited to use it for other languages. This platform gave me good self-study material that was easy to understand. There were ebooks and audio lessons. The data that I received with this project for surely updated. This library is really helpful for those who love to learn by themselves.
Live Lingua Review: Should you choose it?
Live Lingua is the platform that connects me with certified tutors in one-on-one classes. It provides more personalized service. I felt that the tutors on this platform were friendly and helpful at the same time. In addition to that, there were so many free resources on the platform. However, I didn’t like the layout of the platform much. There was no direct way of communicating with the tutor rather than just emails. Also, limited languages were a big drawback of this platform. To make things more clear, I am sharing the advantages and disadvantages of the platform-
Pros | Cons |
1 on 1 live classes with professional tutors. | It’s overpriced |
Lot of free study material | A lot of emails |
Evaluations after a certain period of time | The layout of the platform is not interesting |
Live Langua Alternatives
It’s not important that you must be satisfied with Live Lingua. Or you may have to learn a different language. In both situations you will need the alternatives of platform-
1. Speaky – Suited for the language exchange program
To develop knowledge of a language properly, it is important to have communication practice. Two built-in features make conversations easy- auto-correct and translations. The reason I love this platform is the availability of people of all ages. This is one of the biggest limitations of other language exchange programs.
2. Preply – Live classes
Live Lingua is a platform that is known for its live services. Preply is a platform that is entirely known for providing online tutoring services. There are 120 subjects which are taught on this platform. It not only has a wide range of languages but also there are lots of tutors on it.
3. Drops – Flashcard app
Whenever I want to practice my vocabulary knowledge, the first thing I look at is the flashcard app. Drops is one of them. There are multiple decks on it. I used them to improve my vocabulary.
Conclusion
Live Lingua is the platform that helps to learn the language via an online tutor. The tutors on this platform are very helpful. Despite not getting the course curriculum from the platform, they provide it by themselves. There are only 7 languages on this platform. If you are on a tight budget, try using the free resources. It’s because, I think that the platform is a bit expensive. However, there are many alternatives that can help you learn the language. If you are on a tight budget or do not find this platform worth it, give them a try.
