Preply Review 2024: Should You Use it to Find a Language Tutor?

Live language learning platforms are now in trend. Most of us want the best tutor to learn from. Due to a lack of time, it is hard to find them offline. Preply is one such platform that connects you with them online. But is it a platform that has good tutors? To find out, I used Preply to learn Spanish. I will share my experience with you in this Preply review.

What is Preply?

Preply is an online live teaching language resource for finding a tutor online. It is really an awesome platform for a person who wants to improve their language skills. There are more than 44000 experienced tutors to study from. The tutors on this platform have different nationalities teaching more than 120 languages.

As I mentioned above, there are over 120 languages available on the platform, here are a few of them-

Using it properly means looking for the right tutor on it and booking a class. But how to do that? Here is the overview of how Preply works-

Finding a tutor 

It is very easy to find a tutor on this platform. Here are the steps to get them-

Go to the official website, and click on get started option.

Select the language you want to learn. When done, click on ‘Get Started’. 

Now you must give answers to the questions asked. You can also skip them. Once done, there will be a list of tutors on your screen.

Select the one you want. When I was practicing Spanish, there were so many tutors available to me. It was really confusing to choose one. The details provided by each tutor helped me a lot. There were ratings, hourly rates, etc., displayed on their profiles. Additionally, there were short bios that helped me learn more about them. Each tutor’s profile contains four sections: About, Schedule, Resume, and Specialties. Furthermore, tutors recorded videos to help understand their teaching style. Videos were the perfect way to understand their accents It also has an option of taking demo sessions. I booked three trial classes with three different tutors before choosing one. 

The page that shows the list of tutors also allows filtering of the searches based on pricing, timings, etc. 

Booking of the class

Have a look at the tutors available. Now is the time to book a trial class. Booking a class is easy. To do it follow the steps given below-

Click on the ‘book trial lesson option’ on the right side of the platform.

Create the account by adding up the required details. Once done, choose the date you want.

When done, make the payment for it.

Structure of lessons 

The experience, I had during the lessons was amazing. But let me tell you, it all depends upon the tutor itself. As I got a really nice tutor, the lessons were awesome. Though there is teaching training before getting a teacher board, some teachers may have their style. During my Spanish lessons, I took three trials. Each tutor had its own style. Thus, try to look for a few trial classes before selecting a particular tutor.

The tutors were really helpful and also shared screens with me, which gave me a classroom feeling. Additionally, they used presentations to teach the language. Overall, it was an excellent experience for me. I used it when I was at the intermediate level, so I was unsure about how beginners are taught.

I remember one of my friends who was totally a beginner in Japanese, joined the Japanese class. So, I asked him about his experience. He told me about his experience. The tutors had the books, especially for a beginner. Also, the way classes were created was helpful. They were so easy and engaged that he could learn everything taught.

Note: The experience you will have depends upon the teachers. Thus, make sure to check multiple tutors first.

When a trial lesson is over there are some basic things that you must do.

After the demo lessons

Once the lesson was completed, I was asked to confirm the lessons. After completing it, I could rate it and report an issue with the experience. Once you review it, you will have the chance to book more sessions with the tutor. There are only three plans to choose from-

• Teaching 5 hours – $12 per hour
• Teaching 10 hours – $11.76 per hour
• Teaching 20 hours – $11.4 per hour

Note: Earlier this was not the case. Once, you chose a tutor for future lessons, it was very difficult to change teachers after it. 

I didn’t like the earlier version because many students complained about the teacher’s change in behavior after completing the trial classes, which also happened to me. After a successful trial class, I booked future classes with a tutor. In those classes, she was not punctual. There were times when she joined the classroom even after half an hour. It was quite a bad experience.

But with the recent updates, you can switch the tutor after having 5-hour classes with them. Of course, there is no guarantee, that the tutor will take proper responsibility after these 5 hours. But yes, it’s really a nice measure.

Extra features 

Preply offers a lot of free features. The first one is the ability to take classes on the mobile app. I could take them easily on it. Additionally, there were supplementary resources to help me practice what I have learned. It also provides a lot of self-study resources to motivate us. Another additional feature that helps us to connect with the tutors is the chat option.

When I booked my Spanish class, the tutor immediately sent me a hello message. It was a quick way to connect with her. Also, she asked me to send her doubts any time in the chat. She will help me there. It was a sweet gesture of hers.

Is Preply Legit?

Yes, Preply is a Legitimate platform to use. There are over 44000 tutors available with more than 1 lakh reviews. However, it may look like a scam. It’s because there are more than 44000 tutors on this platform. Of course, not all teachers are getting the right amount of students. 

Preply review: Should you choose it to learn a new language?

If you are interested in learning through online tutors, then I would suggest going for Preply. Multiple tutors are teaching a single language. The demo classes of the platform are a big benefit. Choose a tutor after taking multiple demos. In addition to that the prices are also different. Some classes are overpriced, whereas others are not too costly.

Thus, even with a tight budget, you can choose a tutor accordingly. The only thing I was looking for was some discounts. I think it is the biggest drawback of the platform. The following table shows the benefits and drawbacks of using Preply-

There are many alternatives where I was able to learn the language by live tutors. If you think, Preply is not your choice. Try using other alternatives than it-

1. iTalki 

The biggest competitor and alternative of Preply is iTalki. It offers live classes to students for learning the language. Although the working of this platform is similar to Preply, there is one big difference between them. The tutors on iTalki are categorized on the basis of degrees and experience. The tutors who do not have related documents are categorized under Community tutors. On the other hand, those who have experience and related documents, are categorized under professionals.

2. Rosetta Stone 

Despite being known for audio-based lessons, Rosetta Stone is one of the best live teaching platforms. It is a special feature that comes with a subscription plan. You will learn in a group of six students. I was part of live classes for German. The teacher was really amazing. She was focused on each student quite well.

3. Verbling

Verbling is a great alternative to learning a new language. The platform follows strict guidelines for hiring tutors. Due to this, there is not a big pool of teachers on the platform. Unlike Preply, it only has over 2000 tutors. Each tutor has teaching experience. The classes at affordable too. There are lessons even starting at $1.
